Kwong Wai Shiu Hospital

Founded in 1910 by a group of Cantonese merchants who wanted to provide poor immigrants with free medical services, Kwong Wai Shiu Hospital (KWSH) is one of Singapore’s oldest charitable healthcare institutions. Through the Kwong Wai Shiu Free Hospital Ordinance, a six-acre piece of land with three colonial buildings (built in 1857), which was part of the former Tan Tock Seng Hospital premises, was transferred to us by the British colonial government in 1911.

In the last century, the Hospital has continued the strong tradition of community service, having cared for many generations of Singaporeans. To cope with Singapore’s changing healthcare needs, KWSH also underwent major redevelopments and has evolved into a community healthcare hub today. Given the historical significance of KWSH’s premises, the Urban Redevelopment Authority has awarded conservation status to four of the Hospital’s buildings. These buildings include KWSH’s Main Building and three former Tan Tock Seng Hospital wards.

In 2018, KWSH set up our Heritage Gallery and Trail with the objective of inspiring future generations to uphold the philanthropic spirit of our forefathers. To find out more about KWSH’s Heritage Gallery and Trail, visit heritage.kwsh.org.sg.

Kwong Wai Shiu Hospital boasts 600 beds spread over a 12-storey nursing home building. Staffed by more than 550 trained and professional employees, our In-patient Department (IPD), Rehabilitation Centre and Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) Centre serve thousands of patients every month.

  • Physiotherapy & Occupational Therapy
Our team of qualified therapists & assistants provides a comprehensive range of physiotherapy, occupational and speech therapy programmes based on our regular professional evaluation of our patients’ needs.

Moonlight Home for the Aged and Handicapped LLP

A family run Nursing Home, started in April 01, 1985 by my late father, Mr. Ong Boon Tiong. Novice with no expertise in Nursing or Caring for the Aged but equipped with abundance of patience, motivation, dedication, hard work and a good heart. Molded by the many years of gaining experience, Moonlight Nursing Home was finally established. Till this very day, aspects of hope, love and care are still visible in the Nursing Home. Love and caring for the residents, seeing them smile everyday, making them comfortable are our embedded core values that we treasure each and every day like how we would provide, cherished and lived with our own family.

Services Provided

Our priority in this growing demand for elderly care in Singapore is to focus mainly in providing 24/7 short or long term stay with skilled nursing and personal care services. We try to provide a family oriented atmosphere amongst the residents as well as the staff. Social and recreational activities, including group sessions and visits, music therapy, fun games and arts and crafts, creating a big happy family. The residents will initially come in as strangers and will leave us like they are our own grand-parents.

Ren Ci @ Ang Mo Kio (Nursing Home)

Our first nursing home started at the pavilion wards in 1999.

The residents staying in our home are semi-ambulant, wheelchair-bound or bed bound and some have other medical conditions. They come from a low socio-economic background and require high social as well as emotional support. They receive nursing care and/ or assistance in activities of daily living as well as participate actively in a structured rehab program to achieve better quality of life.

Today, Ren Ci operates two nursing homes in the heartlands, one at Ang Mo Kio Avenue 8 with 472 beds and the other at Bukit Batok Street 52 with 257 beds.

Costs

The monthly charges for nursing home services will cost an estimated price range of $700 – $2418 after subsidy. The amount of subsidy depends on the means test and the classification of care needs (Resident Assessment Form) based on functional capabilities of the residents (ie, whether they needed assistance with feeding, dressing, bathing, walking and supervision of medications). Additional charges include a one-time refundable deposit and administrative charges. Other charges which are not covered by the basic cost may also apply.

You may speak to a medical social worker if you need more information on financing matters.

Services Provided

  • Long Term Care
    • Caring for your elderly loved ones 24 hours a day requires more than just time. Knowing and understanding their growing, and at times complex needs, can be challenging. Demands from work limit the amount of time you can be with them, caring for them, supporting them, and keeping them engaged. Practical challenges such as your living space and physical environment add to the stress of caregiving.
    • Our nursing care facilities provide all that is needed for long-stay residents. With more than a decade specialising in caring for the elderly, you can be assured that your loved ones will be well taken care of round the clock by our team of professionally trained staff, who regard each resident as family.
  • Healthy Body
    • Upon admission, our physiotherapist will assess and develop a personalised rehabilitation plan which is reviewed periodically. Regular individual and group exercises are scheduled to maintain suppleness of muscles and limbs, reduce risk of falls, and facilitate greater independence in performing daily activities.
    • Good nutrition is important to staying healthy. Our dietician looks into each resident’s medical condition, and prescribes the appropriate diet and nutritional supplements. The fresh meals prepared by our kitchen are approved by our dietician, who also conducts regular checks to ensure quality standards are met.
  • Healthy Mind
    • The elderly are at risk of declining mental health. By understanding how mental health has an impact on physical health, we help our residents delay mental deterioration by providing them with activities that stimulate the mind.
    • We offer a wide range of activities to encourage our residents to keep their mental faculties healthy. Residents with dementia are offered a specially designed programme to reduce their rate of cognitive decline.
  • Healthy Heart
    • Being with family and friends, as well as staying engaged with the community, are important for a healthy heart and mind. Doing so provides our residents with a greater sense of belonging, and motivation to stay healthy in their twilight years.
    • We encourage family and friends to visit often, and spend quality time with their loved ones. They are welcome to join in the array of social and recreational activities organised to engage our residents meaningfully each and every day.
    • We also welcome volunteers and seek new friends from the community to befriend our residents and bring joy and fulfilment to their days.

Ju Eng Home For Senior Citizens

Ju Eng 聚英, in Chinese means “a gathering of people with noble ideas”.  It was named by the late Elder Ang Oon Hue, BBM, who was the then Chairman and Founder of the former Ju Eng Primary School.

It was in the 1940s that the late Elder Ang purchased 2 acres of freehold land in Jalan Kayu to build the school.  Eventually, he applied for conversion of the school into a nursing home.  Subsequently, he donated the 2 acre freehold land to the Government to build a modern full service nursing home under the jurisdiction of the Ministry of Health.

Ju Eng Home for Senior Citizens was officially opened on 28 September 1996 by Mr George Yeo, then Minister of Health, accommodating 104 residents in a single storey building under Phase 1 development.  Due to the rapid ageing population and the escalating need for elderly nursing care in Singapore, a five-storey building under Phase 2 was built in September 2001, accommodating a total of 334 residents.

In May 2016, Phase 3 was completed, and the Home can now accommodate up to 584 residents.

Ju Eng Home is an Institution of A Public Character (IPC) and licensed as a Nursing Home under The Private Hospitals and Medical Clinics Act (Chapter 248).

Types of Rooms

The Home provides up to 584 beds for full residential care and is equipped with modern facilities for the physical, emotional and spiritual well-being of the elderly.

Moral Home For The Aged Sick

The Home was set up by Singapore Chee Hoon Kog Moral Promotion Society in 1986 as a community service to look after the aged sick in Singapore. The original Home was declared opened on 11 September 1988.

The original Moral Home For The Aged Sick Limited was a renovated old Community Centre. Because of its structural and building constraints, it could only take in26 residents. From the day of its opening, the Home was filled to its maximum capacity. Thus in 1988, the Home applied to Government for an adjoining piece of vacant land to embark upon the building of the new home. The first-phase of this new home was completed on 17th July 1994 and only male residents were admitted. The second-phase was completed in October 1995, adding the necessary facilities to admit female residents. The project cost was about $8 million.

As this Home is a charity, it accepts non-paying residents recommended either by the Ministry of Community Development and Sports, the Ministry of Health, or through the Medical Social Workers of hospitals.

Types of Rooms

The capacity of the Home is 120.

Moonlight Home for the Aged and Handicapped

Ren Ci @ Bukit Batok Street 52 (Nursing Home)

Additional charges include a one-time refundable deposit and administrative charges. Other charges which are not covered by the basic cost may also apply.

Subsequently in 2015, a new wing was created, increasing capacity by 110 beds to meet the growing needs of the community, offering more of both private and subsidised nursing care. Nestled in a peaceful environment of a private estate surrounded by the Bukit Timah Nature Reserve, UMC at Elizabeth Drive provides a tranquil and cosy setting amidst the lush greenery and wildlife to rest and recuperate.
